One (1) professional development unit will be awarded for each hour of attendance in an educational session at any technology or leadership-related workshop, seminar, class, or conference that is taught or approved by an accredited institution (e.g., university, community college, technical school, or professional association). For example:


Three (3) professional development units for each hour spent presenting or speaking at any leadership or technical topic at any class, seminar, workshop or conference approved by an accredited institution (e.g., university, community college, technical school, or professional association).


Twenty (20) professional development units per course per semester spent teaching a leadership or technical class at an accredited institution (e.g., university, community college, or technical school).


Thirty (30) professional development units for one year of service on the board of a local, state or national accredited organization or professional association where the individual provides guidance and advice related to technology.

Twenty-five (25) professional development units for one year of service as chair of a committee for a local, state or national accredited organization or professional association where the individual provides guidance and advice related to technology.

Twenty (20) professional development units for one year of service as a member of a committee for a local, state or national accredited organization or professional association where the individual provides guidance and advice related to technology. Example organizations include:

  • Florida Local Government Information Systems Association (FLGISA)
  • CGCIO Alumni Association
  • Florida Association of Court Clerks
  • International City/County Management Association (ICMA)
  • Florida League of Cities (FLC)
  • National League of Cities (NLC)
  • Florida Association of Counties (FAC)
  • National Association of Counties (NaCO)Public Technology Institute (PTI)
  • CIO Forum
  • Vocational or Technical Institute
  • Community College

There are many opportunities during a program to provide guidance and assistance, all with varying levels of professional development credit given. These hours also count toward the required 40 leadership development units.

  • Facilitate a monthly online discussion, which requires at a minimum posting substantive comments to the assigned discussion forum at least twice per week during a month (for a minimum of 8 posts): Ten (10) professional development units. [Note: “Partial” credit will not be awarded. You must meet the minimum participation requirements during the month to which you commit.]
  • Serve in the “mentor” pool, a group of program graduates who can review CGCIO™/CPTM assignments as needed, reach out to program participants to welcome them to the program or answer questions on an as-needed basis, and generally promote student engagement. The commitment is for a 3-month period, with no restrictions on the number of months served. Fifteen (15) professional development units per 3-month period served.
  • Serve on Capstone Paper review panel and read and provide feedback on capstone papers: Five (5) professional development units per paper reviewed.
  • Serve on Capstone Presentation review panel and attend Capstone Presentation session(s): Two (2) professional development units per hour of presentations attended.

Twenty (20) professional development units for publication of a book on a leadership or technical topic by an established academic or commercial publisher. Example publishers include:

  • MIT Press
  • Random House
  • Knopf

Fifteen (15) professional development units for self-publication of a book on a leadership or technical topic.

Ten (10) professional development units for publication of a book chapter or magazine or journal article on a leadership or technical topic. Example journals or magazines include:

  • PC Magazine
  • Security World
  • Computer World
  • Computer Trends
  • Public CIO
  • Government Technology
  • Harvard Business Review
  • Florida Trend
  • Governing

Five (5) professional development units for publication of an article on a leadership or technical topic in an association- or organization-published magazine or newsletter, such as Quality Cities, or for published white papers.


One (1) professional development unit for each hour spent in an educational setting preparing for a certification in an area of leadership or in technology specialization that is beneficial to technology leaders (not, for example, MSCE or Cisco certifications). For example:

  • PMP
  • Certified Public Manager (CPM)
  • Information Security Manager
  • Information Systems Auditors
  • ISC2

One (1) professional development unit for each hour spent in an educational setting maintaining an existing leadership or technology certification that meets the above requirements.


Twenty (20) professional development units per course per semester for core college-level work completed as part of a public administration, political science, business or technology-related degree program at an accredited university or community college.
